I’ve been a lot more vigilant about what songs I start my day with. And while I liiive for a moody ballad, I realized starting my day like this inevitably leads me to depresso espresso by the time I get out of the shower. So, in my search for the perfect morning songs that uplift me without fail and prepare me to go out into big scary New York City to #GETTHISBREAD—“Little Star” has emerged as a blueprint.

I am obsessed with this perfect lil gorgeous and celestial tune. Envision an oracle shrouded in warm light in a forest while you’re peaking on shrooms - I think this is what that oracle might sing to you. The magic is all in the production—bells and chimes, mixed with synths that you could only find today by searching “alien space pretty extraterrestrial” in Splice, undergirded by driving but still light and hollow UK-flavored drum and bass production. Together, it all paints the picture of an electro-forward hymn - ethereal, spacious and repetitive. It’s a prayer and affirmation from the future and every listen feels like a blessing bestowed.

Today is actually almost exactly the 28-year anniversary of Madonna’s Ray of Light, a landmark album for the world and especially the genre of electro-pop. “Little Star” is not only the penultimate track on the album, but to me it’s the anchor. It is hands down one of the most illustrative cases of Madonna’s sprawling and herculean creative prowess. This woman is a lot of things (bro why did she do that) but one of them is, indubitably, an artistic vanguard.
